In this Step-by-Step Guide to Sponsoring Your Family for Canadian Immigration, we will review the options you have to sponsor your family members for to immigrate to Canada. Canada has various family sponsorship programs for certain family members, including spouses, common-law partners, conjugal partners, children, parents, and grandparents.
The family class immigration category is the second largest group of newcomers to Canada, with a target of welcoming 105,000 newcomers in 2022, including 25,000 through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) and 80,000 through the Spouses, Partners, and Children program.
Eligibility to sponsor your family for Canada Immigration:
To sponsor a family member for Canadian immigration, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 or older and able to financially support the sponsored person for several years.
Who can be sponsored as family for Canada Immigration?
You can sponsor the following family members for immigration to Canada:
- Spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners.
- Children, including legal or biological children under 22 years of age who are not married.
- Parents and grandparents through the PGP.
- In certain situations, Canadians may also be able to sponsor relatives such as brothers, sisters, aunts, or uncles.
Sponsoring a spouse or partner for Canada Immigration:
There are two options for sponsoring your spouse or partner for Canadian immigration:
- Inland applicant:
This involves going through the sponsorship process within Canada. If you are applying as an inland applicant, you may also submit an application for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) along with your application.
- Outland applicant:
This option is for those living outside of Canada. Only Canadian citizens can live with their foreign spouse outside of Canada during the sponsorship process. Permanent residents taking the outland option must remain in Canada while their spouse remains outside of the country during the application process.
To begin the process, you will need to submit two applications at the same time:
- Your application to sponsor your spouse or partner.
- Your spouse or partner’s permanent residence application.
Sponsoring your family like a child for Canada Immigration:
To sponsor a child for Canadian immigration, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 or older and able to financially support your own and your child’s basic needs.
Your child may be eligible for sponsorship if they are under 22 years old and not married. Children over 22 years old may qualify as dependants if they have a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being able to support themselves and have depended on their parents for financial support since before age 22.
Sponsoring your family like a parent or grandparent for Canada Immigration:
Parents and grandparents can be sponsored through the PGP. To be eligible as a sponsor, you must be aged 18 or older, living in Canada as a citizen or permanent resident, and able to provide the required Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) as determined by IRCC. The MNI and application instructions for sponsoring parents and grandparents through the PGP are updated annually.
Alternatively, grandparents and parents who wish to visit Canada may be eligible for the Super Visa, which allows them to stay in the country for up to five years without needing to renew their status. However, the Super Visa is not a path to permanent residence.
